3D Filmmakers

New Book: 3-D3dmoviebook.jpg (51346 bytes) Filmmakers

Although numerous books about conventional filmmaking exist, none has solely addressed the challenges and production requirements of making stereoscopic motion pictures. Until now. Stereographer and film historian, Ray Zone, presents the insights of twenty-one professionals who have worked in this specialized field.

In this unique collection of interviews, Zone explores the art and craft of 3-D filmmaking with producers, screenwriters, directors, and cinematographers. The interviews range from a discussion with Arch Oboler - producer of Bwana Devil, the 1952 feature that triggered the "boom" of 3-D films - to producers and cinematographers who have worked with single-strip 3-D film production in the 1970s and '80s, 3-D films in theme parks, current IMAX films, and the new and still evolving format of digital 3-D cinema.

These interviews provide an unprecedented look at the unique challenges of producing stereoscopic motion pictures. Over five decades of this unique medium are covered, and will interest aspiring filmmakers, stereo photography enthusiasts, cinema buffs, devotees of popular culture, and film historians. Paperbound. 7 by 10 inches in size. 179 pages.

The World of 3-D

A Practical Guide to Stereo Photography
by Jacobus G. Ferwerda

Since its first printing in 1982, thousands of copies of The World of 3-D have been sold to stereo photographers around the world. This book has been widely acknowledged as the standard text on the subject. It is the most complete and definite book presently available on stereo photography in all its practical aspects from seeing, taking, and producing. It starts out basic enough for the absolute beginner, but advances in logical steps to cover more advanced and diverse topics.

With over 245 illustrations, many of which are stereo pairs suitable for free viewing or viewing with a simple viewer, The World of 3-D sets out to answer the questions that are asked by everyone who wants to make their own 3-D pictures. At the same time, it challenges the more experienced stereographer to think about what he is doing, perhaps from a new perspective.

An excellent addition to this book would be the View-Master 3 reel set Jacobus G. Ferwerda - The Man of 3-D which is a good way to see the work of the man who wrote the book.

The World of 3-D is divided into six parts and 27 chapters:

1 An easy beginning: stereo pairs on paper
2 Taking a stereo picture
3 Perfection in stereo mounting
4 Stereo projection
5 Separation of homologous points in stereo mounting and stereo projection
6 A few special stereo techniques

Gerald William Hoos, a Professional photographer for over 40 years, has put together a very basic guide for 2D photographers interested in expanding their knowledge of 3D Stereoscopic and Anaglyph techniques.

The guide offers a background and introduction to 3D photography and its advantages over 2D photos. It is divided into around 8 2 or 3-page sections to make the use of the guide simple. The cover is an anaglyph, which can be viewed in 3D using the glasses supplied with the book. More Information

Instruction Book for the Stereo Realist Camera

Updated by George Themelis

This is the book about the camera that started the 1950s stereo camera craze.  It is a good starter book on understanding the 5p format and other basic aspects of stereo photography.  The Realist camera has a few idiosyncraticies that are difficult to understand without the instruction that this book provides.  This includes the fact that one cradles the camera on your forehead and the loading procedure of the film which if not followed properly can result in a wasted roll.

Dr. T adds many relevant annotations in his updating of the book and also includes notes on exposure and a sunny 16 exposure chart.  Also included are several relevant articles about the Realist from the Stereogram the Newsletter of the Ohio Stereo Photographic Society.

This book is an indispensable resource for the owner of any Fed Stereo Camera.   Due to the peculiarities of the Eastern European design and the rarity of the camera most repair people have little knowledge of the camera.   The 7P format and the auto-exposure make this one of the most popular modern stereo cameras.  The manual is an 'English' translation of the original factory manual and although accurate, does not have the highest production value.  However the figures and the information is invaluable.

We have included a sample page of this 22 page (5 figures) Softcover book.

NEW Photographing in 3D

This 3rd Edition features more text on every subject, more illustrations including 34 full-color 3-D views, and better image quality thanks to the use of a special high-resolution continuous-tone printing process.

In easy-to-understand terms this book covers everything from taking 3-D photos with a single ordinary camera to mounting 3-D slides or prints, viewing, and even projecting in 3-D. For three years the earlier editions were used for a university course in London, England.

Twin cameras, stereo cameras, attachments, and even a bit of history are all included in this 32 page book. The 34 full-color 3-D views and 27 black-and-white illustrations range in subject from aerial hyperstereos to close-ups of flowers and birds, and compliment the easily understood text. All 3-D images are suitable for free-viewing (directions included), or for viewing with an optional viewer.

The book is about 5˝" x 8˝", printed on glossy paper. If you bought the 1st or 2nd edition of this book, you still should consider adding this beautiful new 3rd edition to your collection. If you are a beginner we strongly recommend this as a great book to get you started!

STEREOSCOPIC PHENOMENA OF LIGHT & SIGHT

THEODORE BROWN (1870-1938) WAS A British 3-D photographer whose special interests were stereo pictures and the magic lantern. From the mid-1890s until around 1930, he sold mirror attachments to adapt ordinary cameras to 3-D photography and experimented with various projection systems for viewing still and moving 3-D images without special viewers. Brown wrote this work in 1903 and it was published by The Gutenberg Press in London in a very limited quantity, probably only 500 copies and most likely not more than 1000, so original copies of the book are extremely rare.

Well-known 3-D photographer David Burder, of London, England, loaned his copy to Susan Pinsky and David Starkman of Reel 3-D Enterprises, and they reproduced it faithfully to create this exceptionally high-quality facsimile copy of the original. In this work, you'll see the stereo photographer's world as it was seen nearly 100 years ago. While just about all the technology has changed radically over almost a century now, you'll be quite surprised to see that much in stereo photography has remained exactly the same, giving this reproduction a high practical value to today's 3-D photographer along with a fascinating historical look at the 3-D of long ago.

The Stereoscope and Stereoscopic Photography

THIS BOOK IS THE SECOND in a series of facsimile editions of historical 3-D works published by David Starkman and Susan Pinsky of Reel 3-D Enterprises; it follows Brown's Stereoscopic Phenomena of Light and Sight (1903), which they published in 1994. The Stereoscope and Stereoscopic Photography was written in 1894 by F. Drouin of France and first published in French. Matthew Surface (then editor of The Practical Photographer) translated it into English that same year for publication in England.

Little is known about F. Drouin himself, but the high quality of his work leads us to believe he was very skilled and knowledgeable in photography in general and the 3-D techniques and equipment of his day. This book focuses mainly on the stereoscopes of that era. Drouin thoroughly describes and illustrates just about all types that were in use at that time, as well as a number of advanced concepts in stereo photography and viewing that became practical and feasible only long afterwards with the development of new technologies. The author also discusses all types of stereo photography methods (e.g., single camera, twin camera, twin-lens camera, slide bar, etc.), as well as a brief section on bin-ocular vision and the perception of relief. David and Susan are to be commended for the superb reproduction quality of this facsimile edition of a fascinating book and thanked for their on-going efforts to provide 3-D enthusiasts with copies of these excellent historical works, in which much of the information is just as valid and useful today as it was over 100 years ago.
